Can Epoxy Resin Floors be used outside
Due to their durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal, epoxy resin floors are widely used in manufacturing, engineering, automotive, aerospace, warehousing, pharmaceutical, and Government infrastructure such as prisons, NHS, RAF, and MOD. However, a frequently searched question on Google asks whether epoxy resin floors can be used outside. The answer is ‘Yes’. But first, we recommend consulting with an experienced resin flooring contractor to assess your specific outdoor project.
One of our most recent outside floor installations was at the joint headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police and Fire and Rescue Service. We installed a Vebrobound Stone system which comes in a range of attractive finishes. This seamless polyurethane resin bound aggregate has inbuilt UV resistance which is ideal for all seasons. Water drains straight through this fully absorbent floor, which eliminates the creation of puddles. Exceptionally hard-wearing it can easily cope with heavy foot and wheeled traffic – and still look the part.
In this blog, we explore some of the considerations, challenges and possibilities that come with installing epoxy resin floors in the great outdoors.
Understanding the appeal of epoxy resin floors
Epoxy resin is a thermosetting polymer that forms a permanently rigid surface when cured and commonly used as a coating for concrete floors in all sorts of settings. The actual application process involves mixing epoxy resin with a hardener, which activates a chemical reaction resulting in a hardened and durable surface.
- Durability – these floors are tough. Epoxy resins are known for their exceptional resilience and resistance to chemicals, abrasion, and impact.
- Aesthetic Versatility – they offer a range of design possibilities, including colours, patterns, and textures, making them suitable for various design preferences.
- Low Maintenance – properly installed and cured, epoxy resin floors will only want minimal maintenance and are easy to clean, which is favourable for indoor and outdoor applications.
Challenges of outdoor use
Epoxy resin floors present scores of benefits. Using them outdoors though, can pose some challenges – but these can easily be overcome with careful planning.
- UV Deterioration – prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the epoxy to yellow, fade, or become brittle over time, which is why we urge our customers have inbuilt UV resistance.
- Temperature Fluctuations – epoxy resin may expand and contract with temperature fluctuations, which can lead to cracking or the material fracturing into layers.
- Moisture and Weather Exposure – outdoor environments expose epoxy resin floors to moisture, rain, snow, and other weather elements, which can compromise their integrity and longevity if they are not adequately protected.
Preparation for outdoor use
These are our top four recommendations when preparing for the perfect outdoor resin floor installation:
- UV-Stable Formulations: opting for epoxy resin formulations specifically designed to resist UV deterioration – this is a critical factor. These formulations often combine additives that enhance UV stability and prevent yellowing or fading.
- Proper Installation and Surface Preparation: Ensuring proper surface preparation and installation techniques are essential for the longevity and performance of outdoor epoxy resin floors. This includes thorough cleaning, repairing any cracks or imperfections, and applying multiple coats for added durability.
- Sealing and Topcoats: Applying a UV-resistant sealer or topcoat can provide an additional layer of protection against UV rays and weather elements. These sealants help prolong the lifespan of the epoxy resin and maintain its aesthetic appeal.
- Regular Maintenance: Routine maintenance, such as cleaning, inspecting for damages, and reapplying sealants as needed, help preserve the integrity and appearance of outdoor epoxy resin floors over time.
